Dale Latinen 2024 In Person Workshop
Dale Laitinen – Shapeshifting the Western Landscape
October 20-23, 2024 (4 Days), 9 AM – 4 PM PST
Intermediate to Advanced
A painting rich with shapes, colors, and details, complete to the final brushstroke belies its beginnings in observation, sketching, composition, and ultimately washes of color that bring it to life. Painting, especially water-media requires an unending enthusiasm for experimentation and a hands on approach to the discipline.
Whether abstract or representational, to paint one needs to build on the fundamental building blocks of drawing, shape making, depicting light and shadow, and using color to evoke emotion. In this workshop we will do just that.
Through painting demos, slide presentations and individual instruction, we will discover strategies that will bring a poetic and inventive flavor to our works by searching out the underlying abstraction in nature.
Workshop Dates: October 20-23, 2024 (4 days), Sunday through Wednesday, 9 AM - 4 PM PST

My work is impressionistic. I like to represent people or places and allow the painting to evolve from the structure of what is recognizable. The challenge is to balance the care needed to make the representation interesting… and perhaps believable, with the freedom, looseness and painterly quality that makes painting so unique and expressive.

Juanita Hagberg In-Person Workshop
Juanita Hagberg – Painting Abstractly Using Watercolors on Yupo
November 1-3, 2023 (3 Days), 9 AM – 4 PM PST
*Recording of the entire workshop will be available for 30 days
Advanced Beginner to Advanced
Many watercolor artists talk about wanting to “loosen up,” and go from painting carefully rendered representations to non-objective or abstract work. Painting on Yupo - a slick, non-porous, white, synthetic paper, can help you achieve this. The surface supports exploration and experimentation, and provides many exciting possibilities for dynamic paintings. Paint can be completely wiped off of the surface, allowing you to correct mistakes, change course, or start over.
Each day, there will be demonstrations, discussion, painting time, personal feedback, and critique. If you want to take your painting in a more abstract direction, Yupo is worth trying. Working on it allows you to experiment and take chances in your art journey. We will go beyond painting what we see, to expressing more personal responses to a subject or idea. There will be new ideas to inspire you, and plenty of opportunity to be more spontaneous and creative. You will also see how using composition and design strengthens your work. Whether you’re an advanced beginner, have been painting watercolors a long time, or feel “stuck,” this workshop will get you thinking about expanding your possibilities as an artist.

Many of us love nature. We spend as much of our time as possible outdoors, or wishing we could. Our emotional connections and visual impressions of the natural world energize us.
Landscapes and seascapes are reflected in all of my watercolor paintings. Recalling my experiences in nature provides inspiration and content for my exploration of natural forms, colors, and textures.
I always wanted to be an artist. I loved drawing, and was attracted to anything creative. My journey to become a watercolor artist began after a career as a public school teacher. I am self-taught, and fortunate to have had 2 inspiring mentors. Experiencing nature is paramount to me, and I love of painting "en plein air." Those impressions become the genesis for my abstractions.

Gary Tucker 2023 In-Person Workshop
Gary Tucker – Finding Confidence with Watercolor
October 16-19, 2023 (4 Days), 9 AM – 4 PM PST
*Recording of the entire workshop will be available for 30 days
Advanced Beginner - Some experience with watercolor is helpful
During the 4-day workshop we will focus on what goes into building a watercolor whether in the field or in the studio. Through sketches and studies we develop our ability to think through a painting and in that process, identify the essence.
“Through the media of watercolor and my process of painting I find power through brushwork, and subtlety through transparency.” “Watercolor differs from other media in that there is a performance aspect to it. The fine pieces come out in one sitting and very often like a classic performance, something happens, a fusion of mind and subject, an improvisation that cannot be duplicated” – Gary Tucker

Eventually Gary was drawn east to Boston where he enrolled at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Here Gary studied with Professor Kaji Aso, who taught watercolor and Japanese Calligraphy. Professor Aso introduced eastern aesthetics, Calligraphy and Sumi painting. Gary was also introduced to the media of watercolor and found he could achieve more subtlety and expressiveness in his painting.

Frank Eber – Beyond Technique: Finding Individual Expression
April 23-26, 2023 (4 Days), 9 AM – 4 PM PST
*Recording of the entire workshop will be available for 30 days
All Skill Levels
The workshop will:
- Continue in the tradition of the 20th Century California Barbizon movement (“intimate works, painted with a limited palette; softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed”)
- Focus on emotional responses to nature Encourage the individual artist’s expression while balancing the forces at play in creation of a painting.
- Topics will include design and composition, color and lighting, positives and negatives, simplification of shape, and atmospheric effects. The techniques you will learn in Frank’s workshop transcend the watercolor medium.
Small class settings only. Please sign up early!
A painter's painter, Frank Eber works in a direct, loose style influenced by the Old World masters. Typical in his art are color mixes and light that evoke nostalgia while remaining absolutely in the present. Frank's watercolor workshops reach beyond technique, encouraging individual expression and observing the elusive balance of forces that create beauty in painting.
All levels are welcome but students should have an understanding of the watercolor medium and of simple one point perspective. Students should be able to paint a simple watercolor wash.
Frank stresses a solid foundation in the basics, “…so that our focus is on creating timeless art. An emotional link is necessary in our work, as well as the connection to the vibrancy of everything we paint.”

Based in Central California, Frank Eber is an artist working in both watercolor and oils. His body of work inspires an emotional response to Nature and Beauty, resulting in timeless, enduring artwork. A closer look reveals subtlety in color, poetic impressions, and serene beauty. “I think it is important to leave some mystery, some room for imagination. When you look at the finished piece, it is remarkable what you think you see that is not really there! For me, that is one of the most beautiful things about painting.” Conveying atmosphere and mystery is Frank’s specialty. In fact, it is the basis of all his work and teaching.

Janet Rogers - Watercolor Impression - Flowers to Figures
May 10-13, 2022 (4 Days), 9 AM – 4 PM, Hours of Instruction: 27
*Recording of entire workshop will be available for 30 days
Advanced Beginner to Expert
We will begin this online workshop with our study of the nature of flowers – learning to interpret flowers in a loose and spontaneous manner – concentrating on discovering the power and movement of color, designing with individual flowers as well as groupings, values, edges (soft vs. hard), leaving white paper as part of the design, and controlling water and brush strokes to provide an intuitive experience.
This part of the workshop will involve sending you some photos of flowers, mostly individual ones (a variety), which you can use for your paintings or use your favorites photos or live flowers. I usually love live flowers but realize it is hard to share, so you can use my photos for your learning process.
We will then move into learning to interpret the head and figure which consists of a series of lessons, quick exercises and then into painting thus enabling students to gain knowledge and confidence in an approach. In painting, we will focus on discovering the unique qualities of translucent flesh tones, features, hair, background, clothing, etc., and in the figure, the fun of discovering the gesture which is pervasive throughout the workshop.

Andy Evansen 2022 Virtual Workshop
Andy Evansen, CWA – A Valued Approach to Watercolor
January 18-21, 2022 (4 Days), 9 AM – 4 PM, Hours of Instruction: 27
*Recording of entire workshop will be available for 30 days
All Levels
“There seems to be a never-ending quest to loosen up in watercolor and it’s probably the most common goal of students. It’s easy to fall into the trap of putting too much into your paintings and editing out the non-essential, whether working from photo reference or painting on location. I tell my students what you leave out of a painting is as important as what you put in.
Painting loosely doesn't just 'happen', it comes from gaining a comfort level with your skills and materials over time. However, there are techniques that can speed up this process.
My workshop will focus on using value studies from the outset to identify the large shapes in a scene. These large shapes provide the artist with opportunities for lost edges when painting in watercolor, which is essential if we are to take full advantage of the medium. Too often the 'found edges', or details, take over the painter's thinking process, and the result is a tight watercolor. "
Participants will move on toward color paintings with a lot of individual help, and complete color painting lessons together. Demonstration paintings will be done by Andy every day to reinforce the day’s lessons.
“To loosen up it is imperative to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish with your painting and then execute it quickly.” This class will give you the tools and confidence to do just that.

Michael Holter 2021 Online Workshop
Michael Holter, NWS, OPS, SWS, SWA– Watercolor Impressionism: Faces and Places
October 15-16, 2021 - 2 Days, Advanced Beginner to Advanced
Many artists have an unnatural aversion to painting people, yet we know there is an attraction to the human form when viewing a painting. Not only does including people in artwork add interest and connection to the viewer, it takes the same skills as painting a landscape or still life. The method Michael demonstrates and instructs you in will take you through the necessary steps to achieve your goals and give you tools to create a well-structured representation while still allowing for the expressive use of color and brushstroke.
Michael's workshop will include insightful discussion of important aspects of figurative work such as composition and capturing a mood. You will spend time on exercises designed to heighten your techniques. There will be real-time demonstrations as well as high-speed video demos of Michael working in his studio. Students of all levels and interests will enjoy Michael's personal and up-front style of teaching as well as his inspirational approach to his work. Students will leave prepared and challenged to move on to a new level of confidence in painting portraits in watercolor.

David Savellano 2021 Online Workshop
David Savellano, CWA – Vacation Journaling- Ink and Watercolor
July 17 -18, 2021 2 Days, 10 AM – 3 PM, Hours: 9
Advanced Beginner to Advanced
David Savellano is an artist who works primarily en plein air (outdoors), creating watercolor paintings that capture random moments—on the street, in nature, and wherever else his portable easel or sketchbook takes him. “I enjoy working outdoors because it’s unpredictable and lends itself to a kind of spontaneity you just can’t get in a studio,” he says.
David lives in the Bay Area and is a native Californian, which is reflected in the sun-dappled streets and waterfront imagery that dominate his work. Although largely self-taught as a watercolor painter, he credits his 30 years as a practicing architect with having given him the drawing skills and strong sense of perspective that have elevated his artwork to a professional level.
David’s passion for outdoor painting isn’t limited to his own sketches and paintings, he also teaches it, offering classes distinguished by their intimate size and the generous amount of personal instruction he provides. His expert instruction enables students to improve their artistic skills and knowledge.

In this workshop, as we practice our painting skills, we’ll be focusing on an often challenging subject- Composition. On the final day, you will take what you have learned and apply it as you choose to your own subject matter. February 4-6, 2021 - 3 Days, Advanced Beginner to Advanced
"The focus of my workshops is far less concerned with technical expertise and far more about inspiration and observation. Specifically, the focus is on finding and expressing ourselves with our unique personal artistic voice." - Thomas Schaller
A common phrase we often hear is: "Mother Nature is the best teacher." While Tom agrees that real world observation is a crucial skill for the artist, no less so are the lessons to be learned from memory, dreams, and pure invention. In Tom's workshops, painting indoors or out, he demonstrates the fundamentals and crucial importance of identifying strong compositional subjects for the artist. No amount of technical expertise or finesse evident in a final painting can compensate for a composition lacking in the strength and clarity of a strong initial intent, a main idea, and a solid value organization. We will try to learn how to see the beautiful and infinite compositions all around us and within us in the most grand and most humble of scenes.

Leslie Wilson, CWA - Watercolors Fresh and Loose - CANCELLED due to COVID-19 Precautions
July 15-18, 2020 - 4 Days, Intermediate to Advanced
In this workshop, Leslie Wilson will teach students a direct painting method for an impressionistic result. She will help you explore brush techniques, find areas of emphasis and employ connections to promote looseness, and keep the viewer's eyes moving through the painting. She will challenge students to ask themselves "what the painting needs," instead of reproducing all that exists in front of them. The students will use still life, figures, and photos as source material and will be introduced to a variety of painting exercises. Leslie believes that good paintings begin with a contour drawing, which hones observation skills and provides a roadmap for the painting. During the painting process, colors are slightly worked out on the palette or mixed directly on the paper, incorporating soft and hard edges. Students will be shown how to use correct value, color, and shape the first time, rather than overworking. Join Leslie for an exciting artistic journey to develop a fresh and loose style of painting!

Stan Miller
What makes a painting convey a subject more beautifully and interesting than it actually is, yet give it all the reality, and even a more convincing reality then that of our everyday lives? Mark Twain said, “First get the facts, then you can dilute them (or romanticize them) at your leisure”. The first step that must be taken if we desire to communicate the romantic in our painting is to make sure we know the truth.
In this painting workshop students will be shown how to truthfully see their subject, the color, shapes, textures, perspective, and design. Once one can see and draw the truth, then…and only then, is one ready to recompose, adjust the color, the lighting and composition so that the message and mood one desires is successfully communicated. Everyone can learn how to paint and everyone can improve their skills, dramatically, if properly instructed. Come join our painting quest!

Frank Eber
Frank Eber (AWS, NWS, TWSA, WW) is an award-winning artist who paints timeless art. A painter's painter, Frank Eber works in a direct, loose style influenced by the Old World masters. Frank's watercolor workshops reach beyond technique, encouraging individual expression and observing the elusive balance of forces that create beauty in painting.
Carol Carter
Carol’s early years in Florida left her with the strong visual impression of the importance of water as an environment for human activity. In much of her work, water provides the setting for anonymous figures, and she often uses images of water and tropical themes. The paintings contain duality: clarity and ambiguity; sanctuary and threat; pleasure and pain. The use of vibrant, saturated-color contributes to the tension between these extremes. Strongly recommended by our recent guest artist, Iain Stewart, Carol is well recognized by her fellow artists.
In this workshop, Carol will demonstrate her technique of wet, loose watercolor. Each day begins with a uniquely tailored lesson to inspire. She will discuss color, water, design, and value. The brilliance of color and the purity of paint application will be emphasized. She will talk about juxtaposing colors to make them vibrate. Imagery, content, and point-of-view are a focus. The afternoon will be devoted to individual instruction and group critique. All levels are welcomed but some experience with watercolor is helpful.
Bev Jozwiak

How can I loosen up?” It is designed to help students at every skill level, to master techniques, and work on design and color.
